Boxer and the "Time of Possibility"
A common theme that emerged as the program committee interviewed members of the Boxer community was a shared sense among them, particularly in the late 1980s, that they were moving through a “time of possibility” - a time where they felt free to imagine incarnations of computation, and the communities that it engaged, that were very different to those they found around them, and were free to pursue these ambitious, reconstructive goals. Forty years later, notions that computation may manifest itself in substantially different ways than we have seen so far do not seem widely tenable or feasible to pursue. I will explore how justified this might be and speculate on how we might think and act in order to restore such notions of possibility.
